06:30 AM – Hotel Pick-Up in Moshi

Your day begins early with a warm welcome from your professional mountain guide at your hotel in Moshi. After a short briefing about the hike, you will board a comfortable 4×4 vehicle and depart for Londorosi Gate, on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. The drive takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, passing through beautiful villages, farmland, and the lush Kilimanjaro rainforest.

09:00 AM – Arrival at Londorosi Gate & Registration

Upon arrival at Londorosi Gate, your guide will complete the necessary registration and permit formalities with Kilimanjaro National Park authorities. This is a great opportunity to take photos, use the restrooms, and prepare for the drive and hike ahead. Your guide will give you a short briefing about the trail, safety, and what to expect on the Shira Plateau.

09:30 AM – Drive from Londorosi Gate to Shira 1 (End of the Road)

From Londorosi Gate, you will continue by 4×4 vehicle along a rough mountain road through the rainforest and moorland to Shira 1 — the point where the road ends. This drive takes around 1 to 1.5 hours and offers beautiful views of the surrounding forest and the Shira Plateau opening up ahead. Shira 1 is where your hiking adventure truly begins.

11:00 AM – Begin the Hike: 3 km to Shira 1 Area

The hike begins! From the end of the road at Shira 1, you will walk slowly and steadily (“pole pole”) for approximately 3 kilometres across the open Shira Plateau to the Shira 1 area. The landscape here is dramatic and wild — open moorland, volcanic rock formations, and unique alpine plants. As you walk, your guide will share fascinating facts about Kilimanjaro’s geology, volcanic history, and the plants and animals that survive at this altitude.

12:30 PM – Continue 5 km to Shira Cathedral & Shira Peak

After reaching the Shira 1 area, you will continue hiking for approximately 5 kilometres across the plateau to the famous Shira Cathedral and Shira Peak. The Shira Cathedral is a dramatic rock formation that rises from the plateau, and from here you will enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Kibo (Kilimanjaro’s main peak), Mawenzi, and the surrounding Shira Plateau. On clear days, you can also see the Shira Needle and the vast plains below. This is a perfect spot for photography, relaxation, and enjoying a well-deserved packed lunch.

01:30 PM – Lunch & Exploration at Shira Cathedral

After reaching Shira Cathedral and Shira Peak, you will take a well-deserved break to enjoy your packed lunch while taking in the incredible high-altitude scenery. You will have plenty of time to take photos, ask questions, and simply enjoy the peaceful, wild atmosphere of the Shira Plateau. Your guide will explain the geological history of the plateau, which was formed by an ancient volcanic eruption thousands of years ago.

02:30 PM – Begin the Descent Back to Shira 1

After a rewarding hike on the plateau, you will begin your descent back to Shira 1, following the same trail through the moorland and alpine desert. The walk down is easier and faster, giving you more time to enjoy the scenery and take final photos. Your guide will continue sharing stories about Kilimanjaro and the Shira Route along the way.

04:00 PM – Drive from Shira 1 Back to Londorosi Gate

Upon arrival back at Shira 1 (end of the road), you will board your 4×4 vehicle and begin the drive back down to Londorosi Gate. You will sign out with the park authorities and receive your official Kilimanjaro Day Hike certificate — a wonderful souvenir of your achievement! You will then continue the drive back to Moshi, enjoying the beautiful scenery of the Kilimanjaro slopes along the way.

06:30 PM – Hotel Drop-Off in Moshi

You will arrive back at your hotel in Moshi in the evening. Your guide will bid you farewell, and you will have the rest of the evening to relax and enjoy your memories of the Shira Day Trip Hike. This marks the end of your unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure with Ippo Adventures.

The hike is moderate. You will walk slowly (“pole pole”) for about 3 km to Shira 1 area and then 5 km to Shira Cathedral, and the same distance back. It is suitable for most travelers with basic fitness. However, because the altitude is higher (around 3,500m to 3,800m), some travelers may feel the effects of altitude — your guide will pace the hike carefully.

How high will I hike on Kilimanjaro?

You will start hiking from Shira 1 (around 3,500m) and hike up to the Shira Cathedral area (around 3,800m). This is higher than the Marangu Day Hike, so good acclimatization and hydration are important.

Where does the hike start?

The hike starts at Shira 1 — the point where the road ends. You will be driven from Moshi to Londorosi Gate, and then by 4×4 vehicle from Londorosi Gate to Shira 1. From Shira 1, you will hike 3 km to the Shira 1 area and then 5 km to Shira Cathedral and Shira Peak.

Will I see Mount Kilimanjaro on this hike?

Yes, on clear days you will enjoy spectacular views of Kibo (Kilimanjaro’s main peak) and Mawenzi from the Shira Plateau. The views here are among the best on the entire mountain.

Do I need special hiking gear?

Yes, good hiking shoes, warm layers (it can be cold at this altitude), rain gear, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are recommended. Hiking poles are optional and can be rented.

Is lunch included?

Yes. A packed lunch and drinking water are included in the tour.

Can children join this hike?

The hike is suitable for older children and teenagers with basic fitness, but due to the higher altitude, it is not recommended for very young children. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

What should I bring?

Comfortable hiking shoes, warm jacket, rain jacket, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, camera, drinking water, and a small backpack. Bring extra layers — it can be cold and windy on the plateau.
